Job Announcement: The City of Kansas City, Missouri Law Department

The City of Kansas City, Missouri Law Department has two full-time positions with starting pay of $59,340 plus excellent benefits.

CORPORATE DIVISION: Represents the City of Kansas City by providing legal advice to City Departments and filing civil actions regarding nuisance properties, dangerous buildings assessments, and receivership cases. All work is performed under the direction of the City Attorney

LITIGATION DIVISION: Defends workers’ compensation claims brought against the City of Kansas City Missouri and the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. Investigates claims, reviews of medical records, and takes depositions and other forms of discovery. Appears before the Administrative Law Judges at the Missouri Division of Workers’ Compensation for conferences, mediations and hearings. All work is performed under the direction of the City Attorney.

Qualifications
REQUIRES graduation from an accredited school of law. Must be admitted to the MO Bar Association and possess the right to practice in all courts in the State of Missouri.

Interviewees will need 3 references and a writing sample. Non-residents, if appointed, must establish residency within the city limits of Kansas City, MO within nine months of appointment.

Asian American Bar Association of Kansas City Condemns Shooting in Olathe, KS

The Asian American Bar Association of Kansas City (AABAKC) is outraged and deeply saddened by the tragedy that befell our community on the evening of February 22. According to news reports, a gunman shot three men in an Olathe, Kansas, bar after shouting racist and xenophobic remarks directed at two of the victims. Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed, and two others, Alok Madasani and Ian Grillot, were injured. AABAKC strongly condemns these events.

AABAKC extends our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of Mr. Kuchibhotla. We wish speedy and complete recoveries for Mr. Madasani and Mr. Grillot as they confront the aftermath brought about by this horrific event.

We praise Mr. Grillot’s actions that day, as news reports indicate he fearlessly and heroically stood up to the shooter. During these times when rhetoric divides this country and crimes against immigrants and minority groups headline the news, Mr. Grillot’s heroic actions remind us of the need to stand in solidarity with our neighbors of all races, religions, and orientations to protect and defend groups that are unfairly targeted.

While further details are still forthcoming, this event serves as a tragic reminder of violence that many Arab, Hindu, Middle Eastern, Muslim, Sikh, and South Asian communities, and countless other minority groups have endured, which, unfortunately, has become far too common in recent years.

AABAKC asks all law enforcement, authorities, and Mr. Steve Howe, District Attorney for Johnson County, Kansas, to prosecute this crime at the highest level. While mindsets are not changed overnight, the prosecution of this crime as a hate crime by the U.S. Department of Justice would serve as a strong statement that hateful, racist, and xenophobic actions such as this will be met with the full force of the law.

AABAKC calls on elected officials in Kansas and at the federal level to condemn this reprehensible action as a hate crime. AABAKC further calls on all elected officials to condemn all forms of anti-immigrant hate, bigotry, and xenophobia to make this country a better place for all of us.

AABAKC is joined in this statement by: the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and South Asian Bar Association of St. Louis.

NAPABA SEEKS VOLUNTEER GENERAL COUNSEL

NAPABA is searching for a pro bono General Counsel to advise the NAPABA Board of Governors and the NAPABA Executive Director on a broad range of legal issues. The General Counsel also acts as a key strategic partner to the Board and Executive Director by providing guidance on many non-legal governance matters.

The General Counsel should be a senior-level, highly respected lawyer who has been active in NAPABA and who has some familiarity with the organization’s history and leadership. The General Counsel does not need to possess any particular legal background, but s/he should have access to other lawyers at his/her firm who could provide specialized expertise in areas such as non-profit governance, Illinois corporate law, employment, contracts, privacy, public communications, and non-profit tax. Although NAPABA is incorporated in Illinois and based in Washington, D.C., issues do arise from time to time that require expertise in the law of other jurisdictions. For these reasons, although association with a large firm is not required, it could be very helpful to the General Counsel in executing his/her duties.

Call for Volunteer

UMKC Law School is hosting the ABA Law Student Regional Client Counseling Competition on Saturday, February 4, 2017.  In particular, UMKC needs judges for the preliminary rounds of the competition on Saturday from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm.
The topic this year is Privacy law – which could be any kind of privacy health, educational, communication, personal, professional, or business privacy – but you needn’t have any expertise or experience in this field.  The competition really simply tests students’ abilities to connect with a client, listen and respond appropriately in the initial client interview.  You would receive Missouri CLE credit for your participation and, by way of a training video I will provide to all judges, you can earn 1 hour of ethics credit as well. UMKC will have breakfast and lunch for judges at the competition.
This is a very enjoyable way to help our students learn.  The competition simulates a law office consultation in which student lawyers conduct an interview with a “client.” Following the interview, the student lawyers explain how they would proceed further in the hypothetical situation.  The Client Counseling Competition promotes greater knowledge and interest among law students in the preventive law and counseling functions of law practice and encourages students to develop interviewing, planning, and analytical skills in the lawyer-client relationship in the law office.

National Employment Law Council (“NELC”): CALL FOR APPLICATIONS


22nd Annual Conference
The Westin Denver Downtown
April 26 – 28, 2017

NELC, will be celebrating 22 years of supporting minorities, who represent management in labor and employment matters, at our Annual Conferencewhich will be held at the Westin Denver Downtown, in Denver, CO., April, 26 – 28, 2017.

The NELC Academy is open to minority attorneys with less than four years experience practicing management-side labor and employment law.  The purpose of the NELC Academy is to provide advanced skills training, expose participants to NELC’s national network of experienced minority labor and employment attorneys, encourage mentoring relationships, promote NELC to attorneys who will soon be eligible for membership, and to create a pipeline for future NELC leaders.

All NELC Academy Fellows will have direct interaction with in-house labor and employment lawyers from major corporations and leading minority labor and employment defense lawyers from across the country and will be partnered with an experienced attorney mentor.  Space in the 2017 NELC Academy will be strictly limited to a maximum of 30 participants.  Fellows will be selected based on a short application, a client or partner reference, and an endorsement from a member of NELC’s Board of Directors.

Academy participation is underwritten by NELC and its sponsors; the registration cost for participation is $150.  Academy Fellows or their employers are responsible for travel and accommodations at discounted rates.

Fellows will be required to actively participate in an Academy-only LinkedIn group in the weeks leading up to the Academy to facilitate interactive conference programming.

To apply for the NELC Academy, submit the following items to NELC no later than February 17, 2017:                                                       Personal statement by the Applicant on what she/he hopes to achieve by participating in the Academy (maximum 500 words).  To fully benefit from the Academy’s mentoring program, the Applicant should include a paragraph describing the qualities the Applicant is looking for in a mentor relationship.
